High Court Judge Appointment (Chancery Division): Marcus Smith

The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Mr Marcus Alexander Smith QC to be a Justice of the High Court with effect from 12 January 2017 on the elevation of Lord Justice Hamblen to the Court of Appeal.

The Lord Chief Justice will assign Mr Marcus Alexander Smith to the Chancery Division.

Marcus Alexander Smith, aged 49, will be known as The Honourable Mr Justice Marcus Smith. He was called to the Bar (L) in 1991 and took Silk in 2010. He was appointed as a fee-paid Chairman of the Competition Appeal Tribunal in 2009.

Lord Justice Hamblen was called to the Bar (L) in 1981 and practised at the Commercial Bar from 1982 to 2008. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1997. He was appointed Assistant Recorder in 1999, as a Recorder in 2000, as a Judge of the High Court, Queen’s Bench Division, in 2008 and designated as a Judge of the Commercial Court.
