High Court Judge Appointment: Thornton QC

The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of a Justice of the High Court. The appointment will take effect from 25 February 2019.

The candidate approved as a High Court Judge is Justine Thornton QC.

This appointment will fill vacancies in the High Court following elevations to the Court of Appeal and confirmed retirements. For further information regarding the number of applicants and number of recommended candidates, please see the JAC website:


Justine Thornton QC

Justine Thornton QC, aged 48, will be known as The Honourable Mrs Justice Thornton. She was Called to the Bar (L) in 1994 and took Silk in 2016. She was appointed as a Deputy High Court Judge in 2017.

She will take up appointment on 25 February 2019 consequential to the death of Mr Justice Gilbart.

The Lord Chief Justice will assign Justine Thornton QC to the Queen’s Bench Division.
