New Coroner Area – Cumbria

The Lord Chancellor is pleased to announce that a new coroner area, “Cumbria”, came into effect on 1 January 2015.

The new area is the result of an amalgamation, proposed by Cumbria County Council, of the South and East Cumbria coroner area and the North and West Cumbria coroner area following the retirement of the Senior Coroner for South and East Cumbria, Ian Smith, on 23 October 2014. The new area is coterminous with the boundaries of Cumbria County Council.

The Senior Coroner of the new area is David Roberts and the Assistant Coroners are: Robert Chapman, Claire Madden, Paul O’Donnell, Alan Sharp, Nicolas Shaw, John Siddle and Simon Ward.

The amalgamation is in line with the long-standing central Government policy, and the more recent policy of the Chief Coroner, to support and encourage the merger of smaller or part-time coroner areas to create full-time coroner areas.
