New Lead Judge for International Relations

Message from Lord Burnett of Maldon, Lord Chief Justice of England & Wales

Following more than a decade in the role Lady Justice Arden has decided to relinquish her position as Head of International Judicial Relations. The judiciary owes her a great debt. She has approached this difficult task with characteristic zeal and dedication and has had an enormous impact on the development of the Rule of Law and the enhancement of judicial education and expertise across the globe. Judges worldwide have been the beneficiaries of her hard work. Lady Justice Arden’s contribution has been transformational and I am most grateful that she will continue to support international judicial relations and have an ongoing impact in this field.

Following expressions of interest from Court of Appeal judges, I am delighted to appoint Lord Justice Gross as Lead Judge for International Relations. I wish him every success in this important new role. Lord Justice Gross will be responsible for pursuing the judiciary’s overarching objectives: to strengthen the rule of law, particularly where this supports the UK’s interests, to promote the UK’s dispute resolution centres and English law in established and emerging economies, and support the UK’s legal services sector as a whole. To underpin these aims, it will be necessary to maintain and promote the worldwide reputation of the judiciary and courts and to maintain and build networks that give the judiciary influence internationally.
