Speech by the Lord Chief Justice: Judicial independence in a changing constitutional landscape

Speech by the Lord Chief Justice to the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association.

It is an honour and a privilege to speak this morning on “Judicial independence in a changing constitutional landscape” – as the
constitutional landscape of England and Wales is still in the middle of great change. I hope very much that what I will say will accord with the overall theme of the conference – “Independent Judiciaries, Diverse Societies” – as the centrality of justice through an independent judiciary is the basis on which democracy, prosperity, fairness and the rule of law depend in our
increasingly diverse societies.
