Statute Law Society lecture: The Right Hon Lord Carnwath on “The Journey to Fiscal Enlightenment”

The Statute Law Society will be hosting a Supreme Court Judge at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (external link, opens in a new tab) on Wednesday 10 July at 6pm.

Lord Carnwath of Notting Hill CVO will give a speech entitled “The Journey to Fiscal Enlightenment – some personal thoughts on the interpretation of taxing statutes”.

He will talk about his experience coming to terms with the, at times, obscure and esoteric world of taxing statutes, new and old.

Lord Carnwath will also discuss coping with the interpretative challenges of the Ramsay principle, contrasting these early experiences with his later involvement as a judge of the Supreme Court, and offer his thoughts on more recent fiscal developments such as the tax law rewrite project and the General Anit-Avoidance Rule (GAAR).
