A detailed classification of styles and categories of intervention which may be made by tribunal chairs and members, based on the work of John Heron. Includes both those which are “helping” interventions and those which are “degenerate” (i.e. misguided). Includes a helpful guide to potential day-to-day problems in the behaviour of members in tribunals (eg argumentative, won’t talk, side conversations) and appropriate interventions the chair might make. Advocates reflection on individual preferred intervention strategies and trying out new ones.
