The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, gave the annual Pilgrim Fathers Lecture at Plymouth University, where he spoke about the development of the courts, the creation of the High Court and its Divisions, and more recent reforms.
Reflecting on the changes that have taken place over the years, he said: “We remain willing and able to adapt to changing times without losing much that is valuable both in the longstanding recognition of the high reputation of our specialist courts and the advantages of judges dealing with a wide range of work.”
