Lord Chief Justice gives evidence to the Justice Select Committee

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, gave evidence on Tuesday 10 November at the Justice Select Committee in the House of Commons. His 90-minute appearance was recorded and can be seen in full on Parliament TV (external link, opens in a new tab).

He responded to a number of questions about the rule of law, lessons learned during the first lockdown; the advantages and disadvantages of using online platforms for court hearings; plans to use a mix of face-to-face and remote hearings in the future; how the courts are coping with social distancing; the backlog of cases and the impact on Litigants in Person.

Lord Burnett also spoke on other topics including the reform programme, recruitment of district judges, the magistracy and his Annual Report (opens in a new tab), which was laid before Parliament last week.
