Lord Justice Mark Warby began his judicial career as a Recorder of the Crown Court on the Midland Circuit in 2009, becoming a Deputy High Court Judge in 2013, and a High Court Judge in June 2014. He was Judge in Charge of the Media and Communications List from 2017 until his appointment to the Court of Appeal in February 2021. He was also Director of Training for the Senior Judiciary 2018-2021, and Chair of the High Court Judges’ Association 2019-2021.
He was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1981 and specialised in media and sports law, taking silk in 2002. He was joint head of his chambers from 2011-2014. He contributed to and edited The Law of Privacy and the Media, and contributed to Blackstone’s Guide to the Defamation Act 2013 and Sport: Law and Practice (2013).
Sir Mark was brought up in the West Country and educated at Bristol Grammar School before reading law at St John’s College, Oxford. He is married with 3 children and lives in London. In 2019 he wrote More and more: law and the Charterhouse in London, delivered as the Sir Thomas Sutton Lecture.
