Amendments to the Criminal Practice Directions 2023 – November 2023

Summary of Key Changes

This is the second amendment to the Criminal Practice Directions 2023[1]. It is issued by the Lady Chief Justice and comes into force on 7th November 2023.

In this amendment:

(1) In Chapter 5 of the Criminal Practice Directions 2023 (Trial Management), in section 5.15 (Sexual Offences in the Youth Court), in paragraph 5.15.6, the following words have been added to the start of the paragraph: “If it is not practicable for an authorised DJ(MC) to determine venue, any DJ(MC) or any Youth Court Bench may consider that issue.”

The paragraph has been amended to make clear that any DJ(MC) or any Youth Court Bench may determine venue if it is not practicable for the decision to be made by an authorised DJ(MC).

[1] The Criminal Practice Directions 2023 were issued on 19th April 2023 and came into force on 29th May 2023. The first amendment came into force on 25th September 2023.
