Sir Michael Keehan graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1981, and was called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 1982 and became a tenant at St. Ive’s Chambers in Birmingham in 1983.
Having been appointed a Recorder in 2000, and Deputy Head of Chambers in 2002, he was then elected as Head of Chambers in 2005.
He was the Chair of the West Midlands Family Law Bar Association and took silk in 2001, and he was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge in 2003.
In 2013 he was appointed a High Court Judge and was elected as a Bencher of Middle Temple. In October 2014 he was then appointed the Family Division Liaison Judge of the Midland Circuit.
He was appointed Family Division Liaison Judge for London in November 2020 until February 2023, when he became Senior Family Division Liaison Judge.
He is a nominated judge in the Judicial Complaints Investigation Office and has exercised delegated powers from the Lord Chief Justice since July 2022 related to misconduct complaints against lay magistrates.
In addition to contributing to the Family Court Practice, he is the General Editor of the Family Law Precedent Service.
