Senior President of Tribunals – Annual Report 2019
The Senior President of Tribunals, the Rt Hon Sir Ernest Ryder, has today (30 October) published his 2019 Annual Report.
In 2016, Sir Ernest published his first annual report as Senior President.
He set out his vision for the years ahead and he uses today’s report to reflect on the progress made since his appointment in three key areas: one system, one judiciary and quality assured outcomes.
Sir Ernest said: “It is now time to return to first principles and ask the question: what remains to be done to achieve the aim we set ourselves four years ago? That was to create a tribunals justice system that is the best in the world with a tribunals judiciary that has the skills, abilities and capacity to be able to sit in any court or tribunal jurisdiction anywhere in the United Kingdom.”
The report also looks ahead to the future of the tribunals, particularly in the context of reform, as well as highlighting the excellent and varied work undertaken by the unified tribunals and the employment tribunals in order to provide high quality, independent decision-making.
This year’s annual report comes later in the year than previous reports because of the additional materials that were published last year: the Modernisation of Tribunals 2018 (PDF, opens in a new tab) and the Innovation Plan 2019/20. (PDF, opens in a new tab)
These reports covered in detail the delivery of the programme of reform of courts and tribunals in England and Wales, and the reserved tribunals in Scotland.
