King’s Bench Master Pre-Application Seminar 2024

King's Bench DivisionNews

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) will be launching a selection exercise in early December to recruit Masters of the King’s Bench Division.

The seminar

The Judicial Office is organising a pre-application seminar that will take place online via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 27 November at 5pm (will last approx. 45 minutes).

The seminar aims to help applicants be better prepared to make an application and to receive up-to-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process. As well as the JAC, you will also hear from a Senior Master and Master.

What does the Kings Bench Division do?

The Master of the King’s Bench Division deals with claims which are high value complex claims concerning contract and tort, especially personal injury claims including industrial disease claims, professional negligence actions including clinical negligence, media and communication claims, human rights claims, and complex contractual disputes.

The King’s Bench Division also deals with enforcement of British and foreign judgments and awards. The work of King’s Bench Masters is challenging, varied and closely analogous to the civil work of High Court Judges, with whom the Master’s have a strong working relationship. King’s Bench Masters have the opportunity to specialise in different areas of the jurisdiction. These include the Asbestos List, which deals with asbestos disease on a UK wide basis, the Clinical Negligence List and the Media and Communications List.

Who should attend?

Candidates must have 5 years post qualification legal experience and are expected to have at least 30 sitting days as a judge or in a quasi-judicial capacity.

Applications are particularly welcome from under-represented groups (women, ethnic minority candidates, disabled candidates). Training will be provided.

Additionally, there are opportunities to observe hearings in court and to have a 1:1 conversation with a Master to gain a better understanding of the role. To arrange one please contact Alexander Mannix at alexander.mannix@justice.gov.uk
