Lady Chief Justice gives evidence at the House of Commons Justice Select Committee

The Lady Chief Justice, The Rt Hon the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, has given evidence to the House of Commons Justice Select Committee.

Appearing this afternoon (Tuesday 25 November 2025), Baroness Carr’s main message from the session was ‘business as usual’, with judges and magistrates working hard on their daily caseloads alongside many important judicial initiatives.

During the session, she spoke about a wide variety of topics, including the continued importance of judicial independence and the Rule of Law, modernisation of the courts, the security of judges and the impact of inaccurate commentary on social media, the use of AI and how it can help produce court transcripts (which play their part in open justice), recruitment of magistrates, criminal courts improvement work, case backlogs and more.
