Lady Chief Justice visits Canada and meets with Prime Minister Mark Carney
The Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, The Right Honourable the Baroness Carr of Walton on the Hill, visited Canada last week, where she met with Prime Minister, Mark Carney and addressed the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Spring Conference.

On Thursday 7 May, the Lady Chief Justice sat down with the Prime Minister of Canada in his office at Parliament Hill, Ottawa, to discuss shared values, including the rule of law and judicial independence, and how continued cooperation can lead to stronger legal institutions. During her visit, the Lady Chief Justice also held meetings with the Chief Justice of Canada, Richard Wagner, and Justices of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of Ontario, the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Appeal and the Chief Justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

In her speech for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Lady Chief Justice spoke in greater detail about the relationship between Canada and the UK and reflected on what it takes to run a thriving judiciary in the twenty-first century.
Addressing the conference, the Lady Chief Justice said:
“Suffice to say that we particularly value our long-term relationship with Canada, who has proven herself a constant, reliable, stable presence; sharing our core social values over many years.”
“By learning together, sharing ideas and best practice, as well as honestly reflecting on failures, we can strengthen the British and Canadian judiciaries. There is much to learn from both jurisdictions.”
