This week, Baroness Carr, the Lady Chief Justice, conducted two visits in the Midlands. The first, in Redditch, saw the opening of a new Crown Court. During her visit, she said, “I am confident that Redditch Crown Court will play a central role in the delivery of criminal justice to the local community, both immediate and further afield”.

During her second visit, in Coventry, she gave a speech during the opening of the Central England Law Centre (CELC). She said, “one of the most pressing and critical priorities of our justice system is ensuring fair and equal access to justice. And here is where this wonderful Law Centre comes in. It has never wavered from its focus on improving individual lives of those in the communities that it serves”.

The Law Centre is one of the largest of its kind in the country and helps around 10,000 people each year with information, advice and representation. To meet growing demand for its services, CELC collaborates with three local universities and delivers seven legal advice clinics, with help from over two hundred student volunteers.
