Launch of Judicial Strategy for International Engagement 2025‑29
The Lady Chief Justice, The Right Honourable the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, has launched the Judicial Strategy for International Engagement 2025‑29.
Each year, judicial office holders in England and Wales visit or host their counterparts around the world and commit hundreds of hours to an extensive programme of training, mentoring, collaboration, speeches and conference events. This mutual exchange of expertise and best practice strengthens the UK’s soft power influence and enhances the reputation of its courts, independent judiciary and world-leading legal services.
Judges engage in international work in addition to their sitting duties, which always take precedence. International visits frequently take place during judges’ vacation time or around court sitting.
The strategy drives forward this unique judicial diplomacy, helping to promote the Rule of Law, improve the administration of justice and strengthen economic growth.
Launching the five-year plan, at the Royal Courts of Justice on 13 May 2025, the Lady Chief Justice said:
“The independent judiciary, the cornerstone of the rule of law, is an integral part of what the UK has to offer to the world.
“That is why international litigants come here and international finance regards us as a safe place to invest.
“It is also why, with adequate resourcing, the international activities of the judiciary of England and Wales can continue to provide an essential contribution to the well-being and prosperity of our country in the years ahead.”
Key priorities in the latest strategy include improving the capacity of courts around the world, taking a leading role in promoting innovation in business law and encouraging cross-border understanding in family law.
There is also a focus on exploring how technology can create savings in court time and costs and how to best address the challenges posed by environmental law.
