Supervising Lord Justice of the Commercial Court

The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon has appointed the Right Honourable Lord Justice Flaux as the Supervising Lord Justice of the Commercial Court for a four year term with immediate effect. In this supervisory role, Lord Justice Flaux, who is also Lead Judge for International Relations, will be working closely with the Judge in Charge of the Commercial Court on all aspects of the work of the Court, particularly in relation to its all-important international profile. The appointment formalises the links between the Commercial Court and the Court of Appeal where Lord Justice Flaux is the Supervising Judge for Commercial Appeals. Lord Justice Flaux will also sit on Business and Property Courts Board.

The Rt Hon Lord Justice Julian Flaux was called to the Bar in 1978 (Inner Temple) and was appointed a QC in 1994. He was appointed a Recorder in 1999, a Deputy High Court Judge in 2002 and a High Court Judge, Queen’s Bench Division, in 2007.  He was a Presiding Judge of the Midland Circuit from 2010 to 2013, Judge in Charge of the Commercial Court from 2014 to 2016 and President of the Special Immigration Appeals Commission in 2016. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2016. He was appointed Lead Judge for International Relations in 2019.
