Lord Justice Nicholas Underhill retires as a Lord Justice of Appeal with effect from 9 October 2025.

Background Information

Sir Nicholas Underhill was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1976, took Silk in 1992 and was elected as a Bencher in 2000. He was appointed a Recorder in 1994 and authorised to sit as a High Court Judge in 1998 pursuant to the Senior Courts Act 1981. He served as Attorney General to HRH the Prince of Wales from 1998 to 2006. He was appointed a Temporary Additional Judge of the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2000, served as Chair of the Bar Pro Bono Unit from 2002 to 2005 and was appointed a Judge of the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2006. He was appointed a High Court Judge (Queen’s Bench Division, now King’s Bench Division) in 2006 and President of the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2009.  He was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal and made a Privy Counsellor in 2013. He was Vice President of the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) from 2018 to 2025.
