High Court: Retirement of The Honourable Sir James Goss

The Honourable Sir James Goss retires as a Judge of the High Court (King’s Bench Division) with effect from 1 February 2026.

Background information

Sir James Goss was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1975, took Silk in 1997 and was elected a Bencher in 2002. He was appointed a Recorder in 1994, a Legal Member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal in 2003 and a Circuit Judge in 2009.  He was appointed a Senior Circuit Judge in 2011. He was the Resident Judge at Newcastle upon Tyne Combined Court Centre and the Honorary Recorder of Newcastle upon Tyne from 2011 to 2014.  He was appointed a High Court Judge (Queen’s Bench Division, now King’s Bench Division) in 2014 and was the Presiding Judge of the North Eastern Circuit from 2017 to 2020. He was a Director of Criminal Training at the Judicial College from 2019 to 2023.
