Judge Atkinson was admitted as a Solicitor in 1987. He was appointed a part-time Chairman of the Social Security Appeal Tribunal in 1998. He was appointed a part-time Chairman of the Disability Appeal Tribunal and Legal Panel Member of the Appeals Tribunal in 1999. He was appointed a part-time Immigration Adjudicator, Fee-Paid Legal Member of the Family Health Service Appeal Authority in 2002 and a Fee-Paid Immigration Judge of the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal in 2005. He was appointed a Fee-Paid Judge of the First-tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber) (Social Security and Child Support)) in 2008. He was appointed as a District Tribunal Judge (now known as Judge of the First-tier Tribunal) (Social Entitlement Chamber) (Social Security and Child Support)) in 2009.
