Following the launch of the Business and Property Courts in Newcastle, His Honour Judge Kramer would like to set up a Forum which meets regularly to discuss legal topics of interest to the professional community, including accountants, surveyors, engineers, architects, lawyers as well as the business community. It is intended to draw speakers from both professional and commercial life and from academia.
Our first meeting is to take the form of three talks of about 20 minutes each on the subject of expert hot tubbing. This method of dealing with expert evidence, with witnesses giving evidence at the same time and the judge leading the questioning, whilst not new, is far from universally adopted and the speakers will be able to pass on their reflections on this process from the point of view of the judge, the expert and academic research.
Details of the first meeting, which will be chaired by His Honour Judge Kramer, are as follows:
Date: 11 June 2018
Time: 5.30pm to 7.00pm
Topic: Expert Hot Tubbing
Venue: Northumbria Law School, Faculty of Business and Law Building (building 17 on campus map – see below)
- His Honour Judge Freedman, Designated Civil Judge for Newcastle
- Bart Kavanagh of Probyn Miers, Chartered Architect and a Barrister (non-practising) with over 35 years’ experience in the construction industry in the UK and overseas. He is an Associate Director at Probyn Miers
- Professor Tony Ward and Ann Ferguson of Northumbria University
In order that we can get an idea as to numbers please RSVP to the below e-mail by 4 June 2018.

There will also be some discussion as to the form which the Forum should take. Those who are interested in joining the Committee will be asked to put themselves forward at the meeting.
