Lady Chief Justice: Diversity and Inclusion Statement

As set out in the judicial oath, the principles of fair treatment are an inherent part of a judge’s role.

As judicial office holders, it is our collective responsibility to foster a positive environment, both in and out of court, where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

In this way, we will earn and retain the confidence of the public, court-users and legal professionals and we will promote the values which underpin our legal system.

We are committed to ensuring that the environment in which judicial office holders work is free from harassment, victimisation and bullying. Processes should be open, fair and transparent and decisions should be based on sound, objective criteria.

My ambition is to have a judiciary where no-one should feel that they are perceived as ‘less’ because of their differences, personal or professional background, judicial office or jurisdiction.

There should be equality of opportunity and treatment for everyone and in consequence, judicial office holders should feel valued and encouraged to develop professionally in order to contribute to their full potential.

This statement should be read in conjunction with the Guide to Judicial Conduct, the Statement of Expected Behaviour and reference should be made to the Equal Treatment Bench Book.
