Appointment of the new Vice-President of the Court of Appeal, Civil Division

The Lady Chief Justice, following consultation with the Lord Chancellor, has appointed Lord Justice Bean as the new Vice-President of the Court of Appeal, Civil Division. His appointment will take effect from 9 October 2025 and will be for a term of three years.

Lord Justice Underhill will, upon his retirement, step down as Vice-President of the Court of Appeal, Civil Division, on 8 October 2025.

Background

Lord Justice Bean was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1976 and took Silk in 1997. He became a Bencher of Middle Temple in 2001 and served as Treasurer in 2019. In 2002, he served as Chair of the General Council of the Bar.

He was appointed an Assistant Recorder in 1992 and became a Recorder in 1996, serving until 2004. He was a High Court Judge in the then Queen’s Bench Division from 2004 to 2014 and a Presiding Judge for the South Eastern Circuit from 2007 to 2010. Between 2010 and 2014, he was a Judicial Appointments Commissioner. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2014 and served as Chair of the Law Commission from 2015 to 2018.
