Judge Kate Markus KC retires as President of the First-tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber) with effect from 1 September 2025.
Background information
Judge Markus KC was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1981 and took Silk in 2014. She was a member of the Legal Aid Board for England and Wales from 1993 to 1998. She was a fee-paid Chairman (now known as a fee-paid Employment Judge) of the Employment Tribunal (England and Wales) from 1998 to 2014. She was appointed as a salaried Judge of the Upper Tribunal (Administrative Appeals Chamber) in 2014. She was authorised to sit as a High Court Judge from 2016 to 2021 pursuant to the Senior Courts Act 1981. Judge Markus KC was Acting Chamber President of the First-tier Tribunal (War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Chamber) between February and November 2020. She was appointed President of the First-tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber) in 2021.
Judge Markus KC was appointed Chair of the Senior President of Tribunals’ Diversity Taskforce in 2021 and Deputy Chair of the Judicial Diversity Committee of the Judges’ Council in 2024.
