Lord Chief Justice: Judicial Equality and Diversity Statement

As the words of the judicial oath make clear, the principles of equality and fair treatment have always been fundamental to the role and conduct of the judiciary when carrying out their judicial functions. As all judges will recognise, these principles should also be reflected in conduct outside court.

We expect all judicial office holders to treat everyone decently and with respect. We are committed to ensuring that the environment in which judicial office holders work is free from harassment, victimisation and bullying. Processes followed should be open, fair and transparent, and decisions should be based on sound, objective criteria. There should be equality of opportunity and treatment, and everyone should be able to work in an atmosphere in which they can develop professionally and use their abilities to their full potential.

This statement should be read in conjunction with the Guide to Judicial Conduct, the Judicial Grievance Procedure and reference should be made to the Equal Treatment Bench Book.
